Start with the three free checks
- Thermostat mode and fan setting. Set to COOL and AUTO, not ON. Fan “ON” blows room-temperature air between cooling cycles and fools thousands of homeowners every summer.
- Air filter. A filter clogged solid strangles airflow, drops coil temperature and freezes the evaporator. Hold it to a light — if you can't see light through it, replace it.
- Breakers and the outdoor disconnect. Most systems have two breakers plus a pull-out disconnect at the condenser. If the outdoor unit is silent while the indoor blower runs, that is your clue.
The nine causes that need a technician
1. Low refrigerant from a leak
Refrigerant is not consumed — if it is low, there is a leak. “Topping it off” without leak detection is a temporary fix that wastes money. Proper repair means locating the leak (electronic sniffer, nitrogen pressure test or dye), repairing it, pulling a deep vacuum and weighing in a factory charge.
2. Failed run capacitor
A bulging or blown capacitor is the #1 part we replace. Symptom: outdoor fan hums or won't start, compressor clicks and trips. It is an inexpensive, same-day fix.
3. Dirty condenser coil
Grass clippings, dryer lint and cottonwood mat the outdoor coil so heat can't escape. Cooling capacity collapses and head pressure spikes — the fastest way to kill a compressor.
4. Frozen evaporator coil

5. Failing compressor

6. Contactor, relay or control board faults
Pitted contactors and burned boards interrupt the 24-volt signal that tells the condenser to run.
7. Blower motor or ECM module failure
No airflow at the vents even though the outdoor unit runs. Often paired with an unusual hum or a hot smell.
8. Clogged condensate drain safety switch
A float switch cuts cooling when the drain pan fills — the system is protecting your ceiling, not broken.
9. Duct leakage and bad design

Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?
Most often a dirty filter or coil, a failed capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, or a frozen evaporator coil. If the outdoor unit runs but the air at the vents is warm, stop the system and book AC repair to avoid compressor damage.
Can I add refrigerant myself?
No. In the U.S. refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification, and adding refrigerant without finding the leak just vents it again. It also risks overcharging, which destroys compressors.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace an air conditioner?
As a rule of thumb, if the system is under 10 years old and the repair is less than about a third of replacement cost, repair. Older R-22 systems with a failed compressor usually favor replacement.
