Furnace Short Cycling: 9 Causes and the Fix for Each

Short cycling means the burner lights, runs briefly, shuts down, and restarts — often 6–10 times an hour. Each start is the hardest moment on the equipment, so short cycling shreds igniters, boards and heat exchangers.
The nine causes, in the order we check them
1. Restricted airflow
Dirty filter, closed registers, undersized return. Heat builds up, the high-limit switch trips, burner shuts off. Fix the airflow, not the switch.
2. Dirty flame sensor
A carbon-coated sensor stops proving flame, so the board shuts the gas valve within seconds. Cleaning is a quick, inexpensive service call.
3. Failing high-limit or rollout switch
Sometimes the switch itself is out of calibration or the flue is partially blocked. Blocked flues are a CO risk and take priority.
4. Oversized furnace
A furnace too large for the house satisfies the thermostat before the heat exchanger reaches steady state. Common after a "bigger is better" replacement. Two-stage or modulating equipment solves it.
5. Thermostat placement or wiring
A thermostat above a supply register, in direct sun, or with a bad anticipator/cycle-rate setting will cycle constantly. Loose low-voltage wiring does the same.
6. Cracked heat exchanger
Blower air blows out the flame, dropping flame signal. This is a safety condition — the system should be locked out until inspected.
7. Condensate blockage (high-efficiency units)
A plugged trap or drain trips the pressure switch and stops combustion. Cleaning restores operation.
8. Pressure switch and inducer problems
A weak inducer motor or blocked pressure tubing can't hold the switch closed through the cycle.
9. Failing control board or transformer
Intermittent 24-volt supply resets the sequence mid-cycle.
